From apprentice to team leader
His journey at Conal began with a work placement in Year 10. “My work placement at Conal won me over,” he says. It was the variety of tasks in particular that made an impression: “The work was so varied and interesting that I wanted to do an apprenticeship in that field.” The next important step followed soon after he began his apprenticeship. “In the second year of my apprenticeship, I was given the opportunity to take on responsibility and work independently.” He describes being trusted with responsibility so early as one of his personal highlights. Working on the Datron ML Cube and the machines used for apprentice training, as well as designing fixtures for bespoke customer orders, had a particularly formative influence on him. “Being given so much responsibility during my apprenticeship prepared me extremely well for the role of team leader.” His career at Conal clearly reflects this progression: from apprentice to qualified machinist, then shift supervisor and now team leader.
